PRF vs PRP: Why FoRM made the switch to PRF for Aesthetic Procedures

By FoRM Health | October 18, 2024

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) have become increasingly popular in the world of aesthetic treatments for their natural approach to skin rejuvenation and hair restoration. Both use platelets and other components derived from your own blood to stimulate healing and collagen production, but they have key differences that impact their effectiveness and the results they deliver. Let’s dive into the top 4 differences between PRF and PRP to help you understand why we’ve made the switch to PRF for our aesthetic procedures.

1. Processing + Solution Composition:

  • PRF: Platelet-Rich Fibrin is processed at a lower speed, allowing more of the white blood cells, stem cells, and fibrin matrix to remain. The slower spin creates a solution with a greater concentration of biologically active components, which enhances healing and collagen production.
  • PRP: Platelet-Rich Plasma is created by spinning blood in a centrifuge at high speeds to separate out plasma and platelets. The faster spin results in a clear layer of plasma that contains platelets, growth factors, and cytokines.

Key Difference: PRF retains more of the natural elements found in your blood, including white blood cells and fibrin, making it a more holistic and biologically active formulation compared to PRP.

2. Growth Factor Release:

  • PRF: PRF releases its growth factors gradually over time, thanks to the fibrin matrix that acts as a scaffold for the slow-release of platelets. This provides a more sustained effect, promoting longer-lasting results with fewer treatments.
  • PRP: The platelets in PRP release their growth factors quickly, offering an immediate boost in healing and rejuvenation. However, these effects are often short-lived, requiring more treatments to maintain results.

Key Difference: PRF provides a controlled and slower release of growth factors over a longer period of time, leading to extended benefits and more stable results in skin and hair rejuvenation.

3. Natural Components + Additives:

  • PRF: PRF is 100% natural, with no additives or anticoagulants. The absence of chemicals allows the fibrin to form a clot, which supports the natural healing process and encourages cellular regeneration in a more organic manner.
  • PRP: During the preparation of PRP, anticoagulants are added to your blood to prevent the blood from clotting. While this process enhances handling and application, it also theoretically reduces some of the natural healing properties of the plasma.

Key Difference: PRF’s all-natural composition enhances its regenerative properties and aligns closely with the body’s own healing mechanisms, making it a more biocompatible option with less risk of allergy or hypersensitivity reactions. Without the added anti-coagulant, the PRF solution is more comfortable for the patient, compared to PRP.

4. Treatment Versatility:

  • PRF: PRF is considered a next-generation therapy that offers superior results, especially in delicate areas like the under-eyes and hairline making it an ideal option for aesthetic treatments. Its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production, alongside gradual growth factor release, leads to improved texture, volume, and elasticity of the skin and improvement in hair quality and growth.
  • PRP: PRP has been widely used in both orthopedic, dental and aesthetic settings for decades. It’s effective for treating fine lines, wrinkles, and hair loss, but may require more sessions to achieve and maintain optimal results in the world of aesthetics.

Key Difference: PRF is generally seen as more effective in targeting specific concerns like dark circles, under-eye hollows, fine lines and thinning hair, offering a broader range of applications with longer-lasting outcomes for anti-aging purposes.

The Clear Winner…PRF!

Having offered both PRP and PRF services since 2012 in Portland, Oregon,   we know PRP and PRF are effective tools for restoring a more youthful appearance and providing the growth of healthier, stronger hair. However, for the reasons listed above, we believe PRF is the superior option, providing a better overall experience and longer-lasting results.
